Abstract of the Book Good to Great by Jim Collins [We used this book under the guidance of our Management Guru Mr. Walter Lumpp in our effort to survive the Great Economic Challenge of 2008-2012]. Hereunder is a copy of the abstract I prepared which the Executive Team of LJ Roth used during its executive sessions for the period September to December 2010.
There is one special word that strikes me in the good-to-great framework of Jim Collins,
which I believe is applicable to LJR operation. The word is “Discipline,” and I want to
present my views on how we can apply the good-to-great framework to LJR current
situation. Jim Collins argued that there are basically three forms of Discipline that are
common among great companies: (i) Disciplined People which he calls Leadership 5
Discipline. This is the mindset that we should adopt if we are to transform LJR from a
good company with over three decades of restoration experience to greatness: Company
first before personal interest (LJR Greatness not Personal Greatness); (ii) Disciplined
Thought which really means confronting the brutal facts. This means everything is non-
sacrosanct: You can eliminate anything in the organization that treads on mediocrity and
complacency. Level 5 Leadership is not about being “soft” or “nice” or “consensus
building.” It is to make sure that the right decisions happen – no matter how difficult or
painful the implication on the situation could be; (iii) Disciplined Action – A culture of
discipline must be immediately instituted at LJR if we want to transform LJR to a great
institution, i.e., where specific goals are outlined and the action plan monitored to
continuously align plans with realities. There is one statement in the book that, in my
view, sums up the book Good to Great Framework: “Greatness is largely a matter of
conscious choice and discipline.”
The Framework adopted by our Team:
Our Management Coach: Mr. Walter Lumpp - President of the U.S. National Institute of Restoration
Larry J. Roth - President & Chief Executive Officer
Neil Reichenbach - Controller
Ben Jewell - McCoy Plumbing Division General Manager
Dave Finchum - Vice President for Marketing and Sales
